Jimmy LaRose shares a New Year’s Resolution for nonprofit administrators, staff, board members and volunteers that’s both powerful and achievable. Here’s what he has to say:
Let me reveal to you a 2020 New Year’s resolution that you can fulfill with great ease by week’s end that ensures you become the successful Nonprofit CEO charities’ so desperately need. Please repeat after me: “I resolve, in the year 2020, to SWITCH my membership to a nonprofit network that will benefit me personally and the organization I serve.” This simple challenge is rooted in an enormity of empirical data and common sense and involves TWO SEPARATE STEPS.
Do you know the many reasons why you should withdraw from your membership from National Council of Nonprofits (NCN)? Are you ready to consider is there’s any value in paying dues to your State Nonprofit Network? Can you cut Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) chapter fees out of our budget? Do you have the courage to NOT renew your Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Let me help you with this by posing another question. I hope you’ll think long and hard on this one. When’s the last time any of the organizations named above made you or your charity any money? (Better yet, how many of your hard earned dollars have you wasted on them?)
Intermediary organizations are defined as ones that “support the provision of services by another organization rather than providing direct services itself.” They tend to be technical assistance providers or capacity-building organizations.”
Here’s the problem. We not only have nonprofits but we have intermediary organizations whose sole customers are nonprofits. BUT WAIT! We also have intermediary organizations whose sole customers are intermediary organizations whose sole customers are nonprofits. These corporate layers have created a predatory nonprofit industry driven by for for-profit puppet masters. How? Because the intermediary organization you belong to are funded by sponsorship monies paid for by FOR-PROFIT VENDORS. These vendors prey on uneducated staff and uninformed board members. They know that if they say, “you need overpriced donor management software” your team will go ahead and buy it. They know that if they say, “you need a feasibility study” your board (who doesn’t know better) will go ahead spend thousands on a product that has no value. Listen carefully to the pervasive messages your membership association is sending. They all come from the for-profit vendors.
Here’s just a few examples of the messages that prop up the scam:
“Pay us to certify you in fundraising practices that haven’t worked since the 1950s. We’ll even charge you thousands of dollars to learn the wrong way to do fundraising.”
“Register for our annual conference where we’ll host ten outdated seminar tracks using PowerPoint presentations that haven’t been rewritten since 1995.”
“Sign our statement of ethics. We are the arbiters of “right & wrong” and for an annual fee we’ll send you a whole new set of rules and regulations that will diminish your effectiveness and prevent you from succeeding.”
“Hire us to expand and train your board of directors. (even though there’s never been a board in history that works or raises money.)”
“Retain us to provide you capital campaign counsel. You’ll still have to do all the work but pay us hundreds of thousands of dollars to talk to you about it.”
“Spend money on how to do properly use social media even though the data shows nonprofits who invest in facebook, twitter and instagram raise less $5,000 per year.”
“Give us $15,000 to write your strategic plan. We’ll spend a cocktail hour on Friday and half-a-day on Saturday with your board. When it’s over you’ll have a document that no one will follow.”
“Purchase a feasibility study from us for $30,000 so that we can come back four months later to tell you what you already know…you’re not ready! Money for nothing!”
“Budget $3,000 per month ($36,000 per year) for a donor management software program that you don’t need and won’t be able to use. Then we’ll charge you for technical support.”
Here’s why this is so debilitating. Really listen to what your membership organization telling you to do. Have you ever heard this one. Host a consultant with a slide presentation titled “Nine Responsibilities for Board Members” that deceives your board of directors into thinking that they’re in charge and need to run the outfit (while denying the executive director the ability to do so.) The intermediaries are putting CEOs in a terrible position of trying to figure out, “How in the world do I manage this craziness? They’re telling me my board needs to learn how to fund raise! So here I’ve got a whole board that doesn’t want to fund raise but I’m supposed to make them fund raise because that’s what a board is supposed to do.”
You see articles like the one you’re reading right now threaten the revenue streams of the intermediaries. They’ve tied their fortunes to for-profit vendors that force them to share a message that prevents you from achieving significant impact. They will continue to mislead unsuspecting nonprofits because of the money they making off the lies they’re selling. I know that’s a crass way of saying it but that indeed is in fact what’s happened.
