Charlotte Berry, America’s Volunteer, NANOE Nominations Co-Chair

Charlotte Berry was introduced to the world of philanthropy by her father at age 10. Always sensitive to the needs of his community James Jackson inspired his daughter to raise money for the “Milk Fund” by performing the play “Cinderella” with her elementary school friends in their family’s backyard. Charlotte charged .15 cents a ticket and was overjoyed when the local paper declared their performance a “Triumph!” She raised $13 dollars and bought 92 quarts of milk for impoverished African-American children in rural Tennessee. This early “fundraising campaign” (it was the year 1941) propelled her to a life of volunteerism that continues to this day.

Now in her 86th year of service Charlotte has been a first person witness to modern philanthropy. She’s served on the national board of the American Red Cross, United Way Worldwide and over 100 regional and local charitable organizations. She’s given millions of dollars to charity and has received countless awards for her service including the American Red Cross’ Harriman Award, United Way’s Humanitarian of the Year, Mary Baldwin Colleges’ Doctorate of Humane Letters and the prestigious Order of the Palmetto to name only a few.

When asked the question “Why NANOE?” Her reply is a simple one, “The Future!” She further explains, “NANOE is determining what’s next. New Guidelines for Tomorrow’s Nonprofit overviews  the changes that must occur to ensure the health and welfare of the charitable sector for decades to come. What Kathleen Robinson and her Board of Governors have accomplished in their first year is remarkable. I can’t wait to see that they have in store for 2018.”

In closing, Charlotte Berry finds a need and meets it. She makes a promise and keeps it. She’s spent her life in service to others ensuring that they, like her, experience a life worth living.

Charlotte Berry is truly “America’s Volunteer.”
