The Perfect Campaign Cabinet Fundraising Chair – Charlotte Berry

The Perfect Campaign Cabinet Fundraising Chair – Charlotte Berry is an article by Jimmy LaRose about his dear friend Charlotte who always ensured fundraising campaign success. Jimmy is the architect of the Major Gifts Ramp-Up Model. Here’s what LaRose has to share:

What is a Campaign Cabinet Fundraising Chair?

Simply put, the chair of a fundraising campaign is a key leader who organizes a group of fellow volunteers who generate contributions to the campaign.

Do I Need a Campaign Cabinet Fundraising Chair?

Yes, a fundraising chair is a crucial team member for a campaign. The chair is responsible for overseeing campaign committees and acting as an ambassador for the campaign in the community. They can help set the campaign up for success by making a large donation early on, and they can also promote and advocate for the campaign community-wide.

Are You Willing to Wait for a Perfect Campaign Cabinet Fundraising Chair?

Let me tell you about Charlotte Berry.

Campaign Cabinet Fundraising ChairI’ve worked on various projects with Charlotte for over a decade, and am one of many witnesses to her extraordinary example of what it means to be a perfect campaign cabinet fundraising chair. Charlotte is also one of Major Gifts Ramp-Up great champions. I’m personally grateful for our friendship. I affectionately call her America’s Volunteer!

Charlotte began collecting dimes from classmates for her school’s Junior Red Cross chapter at age twelve. Today, at age eighty-four, she continues in that same tradition as a national spokesperson for the value of philanthropy, and volunteerism. Over the years, she’s generated millions of dollars for various community causes through her own personal gifts as well as through the solicitation of public and private funds from others. She’s served on bank boards, college boards, led cultural arts projects, and co-founded various groups, including Women in Philanthropy. Her national service to both the American Red Cross and the United Way of America further demonstrate her unwavering commitment to grow the charitable sector.

Charlotte will testify that one of her most important responsibilities is to involve people in philanthropy for the first time. She enjoys helping others find the right fit for what they have to offer e.g. volunteer work, a board position, or a financial gift they hadn’t previously considered. She strongly believes that everyone should experience what it feels like to give back, and is fond of saying, “Do something every day to feel good.”

Simply put, in our town, if you’re about to launch a fundraising campaign you want Charlotte to be at the helm.

The Perfect Fundraising Campaign Cabinet Chair – Charlotte Berry

Any nonprofit that’s about to tackle a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign must patiently wait for their champion to emerge. Charlotte is a well-heeled philanthropist who built friendships with prominent families and leaders in every community she’s called home. Her capacity to SECURE & ORGANIZE a team of fellow-volunteers who both “give” and “ask” is the difference between fundraising success and failure.

Charlotte is the type of veteran volunteer fundraiser who will inspire the right people to join and fundraise for your campaign. Understanding the qualities that make her a great campaign chair (and then recruiting the best possible cabinet members) are the most important factors in your ultimate success. Here’s five reasons why Charlotte is a perfect campaign chair:

Proven – A campaign chair must have a proven record of success. A visible, accomplished leader not only brings experience and wisdom to your campaign but also attracts other successful community volunteers who want to associate with him or her. This solid campaign leadership team creates critical momentum. Positive – A campaign chair’s positive attitude will communicate to the community that success is assured and will help volunteers navigate any challenges that arise. The positive, respectful team atmosphere cultivated by the chair will lead to motivated volunteers who get the job done. Passionate – A campaign chair is effective at leveraging support for the campaign when his authentic passion for the cause shines through. A leader’s genuine belief in the importance and urgency of the campaign will be critical to her ability to attract the support of other lead donors. Pacesetting – A campaign chair should be excited about making a gift that sets the tone for the campaign. The community will be looking closely at the level of commitment from a well-known, highly regarded chair and that leadership gift will provide leverage for engaging others whose gifts will propel the campaign to success. Personal – A campaign chair must be willing to make the campaign a priority in his or her busy life. The other characteristics work to your advantage only when the chair makes the time necessary to be personally involved in the campaign–attending strategy sessions, opening doors, recruiting other volunteers, and making solicitation calls. Don’t settle on this, or you risk having an honorary chair instead of the working chair you need to succeed.

What’s Next?

The campaign chair(s) should be recruited early in the campaign process, soon after the case for support summary is in printed form. This way the chair person can help “flesh out” the final version of the Case for Support, that will also contain the campaign plan. The volunteer chair can help to draft a document that is better understood by the potential donor, one that relates better to his or her understanding of the institution and its need for support.

When your chair is in place they will recruit and train other campaign cabinet members. Prospective donors will be identified, qualified, and assigned to individual cabinet members (five names each). Your campaign chair will launch and implement the campaign plan. Regular, monthly campaign cabinet report meetings will be conducted to keep the campaign on schedule and provide accountability from each committee member.

The campaign’s chair(s) will lead by example and assist each of her or his cabinet member as needed. A good coach wants each of his team members to succeed, and will provide whatever is needed for success.

You can do this. You’re fundraising campaign will succeed if you’re willing to wait for the PERFECT CAMPAIGN CABINET FUNDRAISING CHAIR!

I wish you my kind of success and look forward to meeting you personally. Until then I remain,

Sincerely Yours,

Jimmy LaRose
