The BASE Hosts 5th Annual Women’s Leadership Breakfast (Roxbury, MA) celebrates a special nonprofit that supports female student-athletes.

In an exciting return to in-person events, on Tuesday March 29th The BASE was pleased to host its 5th annual Women’s Leadership Breakfast at the UMass Club in Boston. More than 100 women representing Greater Boston’s corporate, nonprofit, philanthropic, and higher education communities were in attendance for the breakfast which breakfast brought together a powerful and diverse panel of female business and civic leaders including:

Dr. Makeeba McCreary, President of the New Commonwealth Fund

Dr. Aisha Jamila Francis, President of Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology

Katie Everett, Executive Director of The Lynch Foundation

Betty Francisco, CEO of Boston Impact Initiative and Cofounder of Amplify Latinx

Dalila Argaez-Wendlandt, Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court

This is the first Women’s Leadership Breakfast following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With “transitions” as the theme of this year’s breakfast, The BASE took a new approach to a traditional panel discussion. Each panelist was paired with a student-athlete for an interview about the values and lessons that have carried them through personal and professional transitions. Then, panelists asked questions of the student-athletes. The young women spoke of the transitions and challenges they’ve faced in their lives over the last two years.

The BaseThis year also marks the first time The BASE hosted the popular event as a fundraiser – raising $35,000 to further its commitment to creating equitable access and opportunity for Boston’s talented urban youth.

“I’m thrilled that our first fundraising breakfast was such a success,” said interim President of The BASE Stephanie Monteiro-Merritt. “Our BASE student-athletes thrive because of our many dedicated supporters and partners who share our vision of creating pathways success for youth through sports and academic support. These funds will help offset the cost of travel to local and out-of-state tournaments, uniforms, and equipment, as well as our college and career programming. As we serve more and more girls at The BASE, this support is critical.”

The panel was moderated by Natanja Craig-Oquendo, Executive Director of the Boston Women’s Fund.  First Lady Lauren Baker, and Executive Director of Mass Housing, Chrystal Kornegay served as co-hosts.  UMass President Marty Meehan gave opening remarks. Event sponsors include The Smith Family Foundation, Foundation to be Named Later, Grace Fey, Linda Dorcena Forry, and Stephanie Shapiro-Berkson.

First Lady Lauren Baker added “It was wonderful to see friends and supporters of The BASE come together again for this special event, with such accomplished and inspiring women on the panel. The student-athletes were so impressive, we could see first-hand the impact The BASE has had on them. We had a great time and people were clearly excited to donate and support their work.”
