Governors will CONTRIBUTE & COLLABORATE to “New Guidelines for Tomorrow’s Nonprofit – Second Edition” by answering the following six questions:

1. What do you think is the most important idea presented in the Guideline?
2. What idea in this guideline do you have concerns about? Why?
3. What idea is not clear to you or you think needs amplification?
4. What do you think needs to be added to the guideline to make it more helpful?
5. Do you think any additional practices need to be added to this guideline? If so what are they?
6. In what ways do you think this guideline helps promote nonprofit growth?

NANOE Governors’ Video Overview provided Dr. Kathleen Robinson the opportunity to challenge NANOE Governors to consider the several ideas when reviewing this 700 page booklet series.

Dr. Robinson shared, NEW GUIDELINES FOR TOMORROW’S NONPROFIT…

• are for leaders who want to grow their organization.
• they are intentionally NOT written to give more pablum but to give meat. It will take time to digest what’s there. They are meant to go beyond the basics, to make you think.
• They are meant to expand your thought and challenge your thinking and practices.
• They are for leaders who are self-learners and understand the need to continuously learn to improve and alter practice.
• They are not meant to be read all at one sitting.
• Read them is sections (one or two key practices at a time) and think about what’s said for a while.
• Each guideline is re-enforced and becomes the basis for other guidelines. Once one guideline is read you may want to go back and re-read with new understandings a previous guideline that you read.
• The footnotes are important. Take the time to explore the links given. They will give ample resources, tools, examples of what’s discussed so that your insight is enriched.
• You may want to start by reading the glossary of terms in the back of each guideline. Some terms are defined differently by different people. To get what’s said, use the definition given so that you and the writer are on the same page.
• The guidelines suggest that one set of practices doesn’t fit all situations, but that there are some common practices used by those that do grow that are worth examining to see how they might fit or be adapted to your situation.
• They are meant to evoke conversation among a group that works together so that there is greater clarity of purpose, mission, strategy and outcomes.
• They are meant to highlight cultural shifts that have and are occurring in the nonprofit sector.
• They are NOT meant to be the last word or a ‘sacred’ word, or even as a set of rules/standards/codes you MUST follow to be compliant or ‘effective’. The guidelines are guides or pathways to growth revealed by those who have grown and by those that have studied exemplar models of growth and impact.
• Ultimately the measure of your success will be on the impact and outcomes your organization produces and your role in leading the efforts to achieve them. Hence the guidelines are impact oriented and not growth for growth’s sake.
• The guidelines also remind us all that organizations, like humans, grow and can decline. Nonprofits have a life cycle. Achieving and sustaining effectiveness is an on-going leadership and management process. Therefore, some guidelines will be more relevant to your current circumstance than others. As circumstances change don’t forget to review the guidelines again for what others have done in similar situations.
