Cummings School of Architecture at Roger Williams University celebrates a historic investment in a Rhode Island institution of higher-learning.

2022 (BOSTON, Mass.) – Woburn-based Cummings Foundation has again invested in workforce development through a new $20 million pledge to Roger Williams University. This commitment, the largest in the Rhode Island institution’s history, will support multidisciplinary programming at the newly rededicated Cummings School of Architecture.

A new Cummings Institute for Real Estate is centered within Cummings School of Architecture. This new institute will integrate the legal, financial, and environmental considerations of real estate development with the aesthetic and practical principles of architecture, preservation, and urban and regional planning.

“This is a first-in-the-nation program to offer such a distinctive combination of subjects,” said Roger Williams University president Yannis Miaoulis, Ph.D. “Powered by this historic partnership, Cummings School of Architecture will serve as a catalyst for the university’s continued and growing success in preparing students to be leaders in all facets of sustainable and equitable design, preservation, and development.”

Students at the Cummings School may pursue professional certificates as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees. According to Miaoulis, this expanded programming “aligns perfectly with Bill Cummings’ professional legacy and the entrepreneurial spirit of his entire organization.”

“One constant in the business world is that a well-educated, well-prepared workforce spurs economic progress,” said Cummings Foundation co-founder Bill Cummings, who in 1970 founded full-service commercial real estate firm Cummings Properties. “We are delighted to invest in Roger Williams’ proven efforts to shape the highly skilled, socially conscious workforce of tomorrow.”

Roger Williams University is the fifth post-secondary school to join Cummings Foundation’s Affiliated Colleges,” a group of unrelated schools connected by Cummings as a major benefactor. The other institutions are Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University; Cummings Institute of Global Health at University of Global Health Equity, in Rwanda; Cummings School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Endicott College; and Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology.

The Foundation has no operational control over any of these entities, but has committed at least $10 million to career-readiness curricula at each.

Miaoulis will join the leaders of the other four Affiliated Colleges as a community trustee of Cummings Foundation.
