Agnes Binagwaho and Aisha Francis INSIDE CHARITY

Agnes Binagwaho & Aisha Francis Join Cummings Foundation celebrates the appointment of two distinguished educators to one our nation’s leading philanthropic institutions.

BOSTON – Cummings Foundation, of Woburn, has appointed the top executives of two higher education institutions to its board of trustees: Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, vice chancellor of University of Global Health Equity, and Dr. Aisha Francis, president and CEO of Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology.

This pair joins 20 other trustees contributing to the growth and oversight of the $3 billion private foundation.

“Agnes and Aisha are two extraordinarily accomplished professionals,” said Cummings Foundation co-founder Bill Cummings. “Their shared passion for social, educational, and economic equity makes them particularly valuable additions to the Foundation’s advisory team.”

Agnes Binagwaho, M.D., Ph.D. has dedicated her career to advancing healthcare equity. A former Rwandan minister of health, she co-founded University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in that east African country in 2015. UGHE delivers accessible, high-quality training to the world’s future health leaders.

Binagwaho is a member of U.S. National Academy of Medicine and World Academy of Sciences. She has earned numerous accolades for her contributions to public health, including the Roux Prize and, in 2021, the International Prize for Women in Science.

A professor of pediatrics at UGHE, she also teaches at Harvard Medical School and Dartmouth University. Binagwaho serves on the board of Rockefeller Foundation and has been recognized as one of the “most influential women in Africa” by Advance Media and The African Exponent.

Aisha Francis, Ph.D. is the first female president and CEO of the historic Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology. Boston’s only technical college, it offers affordable career training for a largely minority and first-generation college student population.

Prior to joining the Institute’s executive team, she drove development and marketing at Harvard Medical School, Economic Mobility Pathways, John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and Boston Medical Center.

Francis has advocated for economic empowerment through leadership positions with neighborhood and global organizations, including Boston Employment Commission, The Links Inc., and Chief. She was also honored among Boston Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” leaders to watch.

UGHE and Ben Franklin Cummings Institute share a focus on experiential learning and workforce development. Although unaffiliated with each other, the institutions are connected through their relationship to Cummings Foundation: Both have been inducted to Cumming’s group of “Affiliated Colleges” and received a pledge of at least $10 million each from the Foundation.

Cummings Foundation has awarded more than $375 million to nonprofits based in greater Boston. Among its other community trustees are fellow academic leaders Steven DiSalvo, Ph.D., president, Endicott College; David Harris, Ph.D., president, Union College; Deborah T. Kochevar, D.V.M., Ph.D., former Cummings School dean and provost of Tufts University; and Anthony P. Monaco, M.D., Ph.D., president, Tufts University.

Additional board members include Richard Ockerbloom, retired president of The Boston Globe; the Honorable Margot Botsford, retired associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court; and Jack Connors, Jr., local philanthropst and retired founding partner of Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos.
